Profile
Paul’s interest in energy dates back to the beginning of his PhD studies, which were in the field of solar thermal power. On finishing his academic studies in 1991, Paul became an energy consultant in New Zealand, concentrating on energy efficiency in buildings and acquiring the technical and personal skills necessary to be an effective energy manager. Paul rapidly developed to become the Managing Director of one of New Zealand’s largest energy efficiency consultancies within five years of joining the workforce.
In 1999, Paul moved to Australia and founded Exergy. Starting with some major government contracts, Paul has built Exergy into Australia’s leading energy efficiency company. Under Paul’s leadership Exergy has been instrumental in driving change towards energy efficiency in the commercial building industry, including playing a central role in the development of the Australian Building Greenhouse Rating scheme (ABGR) and the National Australian Built Environment Rating Scheme (NABERS), which have transformed the commercial property market in Australia.
Paul is internationally renowned as an expert in building energy management and has experience in over 400 building projects, in various roles, including:
- Energy auditing of commercial and institutional buildings, including offices, hotels, universities and hospitals;
- Leadership in energy efficient design, through operation as an independent design reviewer on nearly 100 projects as well as a core-team ESD design advocate on numerous significant projects;
- Supervision of computer simulation of building design in use for the assessment of design options and prospective new building performance
Paul is an ABGR/NABERS auditor and accredited Independent Design Reviewer for ABGR, with a key ongoing role in the development of the rules and underlying logic of the ABGR/NABERS schemes.
Paul is author of over 60 publications in the field of energy use and has a significant international profile. He has presented on energy-related topics in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, the US, Canada and the UK.
