New Children’s Hospital Energy Audit and Detailed Feasibility Study

Client: AGL
Date: 1999 – 2000

The New Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney is a modern 89,000 m2 facility with 350 beds.  The hospital provides a full range of children’s health services.

In 2000, Exergy completed an investment grade energy audit of the Hospital on behalf of AGL.  The audit was completed as part of an energy performance contract between AGL and the Hospital.  Exergy identified and investigated a number of opportunities to reduce energy consumption and costs, including:

  • Air conditioning system recommissioning;
  • Improved cooling tower controls;
  • Lighting system upgrade;
  • Domestic hot water upgrade, including the installation of solar hot water; and
  • Power factor correction.

Total savings opportunities identified by Exergy amounted to almost 16% of the site energy use, with an average payback of less than 3 years.  Exergy also completed a study into the engineering and financial feasibility of each energy savings measure.

Exergy maintains an ongoing advisory and monitoring role in the project.
