John Hunter Hospital – Preliminary Study

Date: 2002
Client:  AGL

John Hunter Hospital is the primary hospital serving the city of Newcastle, north of Sydney, NSW.  Built in the late 1980’s, it is a modern 65,000m2 facility covering all aspects of hospital services.

Exergy was commissioned to conduct a preliminary investigation of the site on behalf of AGL.  Our investigations revealed a site that had many common technical problems under control, but where the air conditioning plant was generally oversized.  We identified that it would be feasible to address many of the oversizing problems through simple measures, such as changing fan speeds and introducing variable speed controls.  Opportunities for gas savings through improved boiler load management were identified, and lighting improvements were also identified.  Total estimated savings were of the order of 10%.
